Mystical Experiences

My own Navajo background is filled with stories of meetings with the Holy People, monsters and fantastic supernatural events. It wasn't a huge stretch for me to get inthralled with the pantheon of Indian/Tibetan Buddhist deities. Someone from an ordinary Western perspective might have a hard time conceptualizing the realms of the esoteric but for my mind that was already absorbed in legend, it was a simple transition.

Navajo legendary heroes, like the Twins that defeated the monsters of the four directions that were causing harm to the Navajo people, are quite similar to the lives of the great siddhas. Many auspicious signs manifest at their birth or are predicted in dreams and visions. There are circumstances that arise that they alone have to address. They are trained by realized beings by journeys to scared places. Obstacles and harm to the general populace is averted by their actions. They restore balance and harmony, heal the sick and bring about the auspicious conditions.

All of this is accomplished by the power of the meditative mind and the resolute decision to be of benefit to others.

Wisdom and Method.
